Letterman Returns
Leno\Conan Scabs

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- David Letterman's ``Late Show'' returns to CBS television tonight with fresh material and his team of comedy writers, as rival Jay Leno faces picketers outside the NBC studio for his unscripted performance.

Letterman's Worldwide Pants company reached a labor agreement with striking entertainment writers on Dec. 28, allowing his show and Craig Ferguson's to resume production with their writers. NBC's Leno and Conan O'Brien, as well as Jimmy Kimmel on ABC, come back tonight without their writing staffs.

Both sides in the two-month-old strike by the Writers Guild of America say the return of late-night shows strengthens their positions. The networks are counting on the programs to boost ratings that have sagged since reruns began airing Nov. 5. Writers say the Letterman accord will pressure NBC and ABC as their hosts confront competitors backed by writing teams.

Richard Roeper of Ebert & Roeper said in his review of the film, "This just might be the silliest movie ever to feature three Academy Award winners."
